S&E week 1 edit

Okay so here is my week 1 attempt at editing. Here is the orignal SOOC shot:
And here is the edited version (done in Photoshop Elements 9)
I'm not all the happy with it, but this is the best I can get to right now without pulling my hair out. This is my main reason for joining in on this weekly post, I tend to get frustrated when I am editing and get "stuck" per say. So I hope this can help me with this!

I did some brightness and contrast, black and white levels and hue saturation adjustments, then I created a background copy and did a high pass filter (I had never done this it was really cool!) and changed it to soft light. I then ran Pioneer Woman's Seventies action on color dodge at 40%. I think it looks pretty similar to the original but I found if I tried to up the brightness really at all I lost a lot of the details in the ice. Maybe it is more the original shot that should have been tweaked a little. Oh well live and learn right.

I can see a huge difference...it looks great - don't be so hard on yourself. And if you have questions, just shoot me a message and I'll be happy to help. :)

I think it looks AWESOME! Great crop, great edit...the ice has so much detail. Love it :)

@Ashley SiskThanks! I have to say the high pass fliter thing is the BEST! I had never heard of that, of course I have only had PSE for a few weeks now and it is not always easy to find time to play with it with a little one around.

@julieThanks, looking at it again it is not as bad as I first thought. I think I was just getting annoyed with it.

I like it! Its all in what YOU are going for - I tend to want the fine details too. Hey, we're all learning! :)

I really LOVE IT! The detail popped - there is a sense of dramatic freeze in the shot now too! Great job!

Blessings and thanks for joining in!

Please read my post tonight about turning off your word verification... Thank you!

This really does "pop"... it looks good! :)

I think your sooc shot was great (as far as exposure/whatever.) Maybe you made the shadows just a touch too dark in the edit, but I do like the pop. And hey, we all got to start somewhere, and it looks like you're off to a great start!

@Mom to 9 Blessings! Thanks, I was hoping that the details would pop some. Ashley's tricks really did help. I turned off the word verification (i actually forgot I had that on) thanks for reminding me!

@MichelleYeah the shadows were what I was looking at too. True we all have to start somewhere and hopefully end up in a much better place, right?
